Why it matters for golf
The static hold parks the thoracic spine at end range and lets the tissue adapt there. That builds usable rotation for the top of the backswing. Held positions also teach the golfer what a full turn should feel like without rushing through it.
Coaching cues
- Rotate open, then hold still at end range.
- Follow the top hand with your eyes.
- Breathe slow in the hold. Exhale to open a little more.
- Hold several breaths per side and keep the hips quiet.
Common faults
- Hips rotating along with the trunk.
- Holding the breath at end range.
- Letting the position collapse during the hold.
